History

History of SHG

The Seattle Homeschool Group has existed in some form since the 1980s. The group brought together like-minded families who wished to homeschool but whose reasons were not primarily religious.

In the early 2000s, SHG began to grow considerably, and more and more opportunities were created by members. SHG alumni recall that everyone who was involved provided some sort of service to the group, be it a volunteer role, field trip, or even just good advice to new families. Groups of parents worked with local community centers to create weekly class programs for homeschoolers within SHG and beyond. The programs at Loyal Heights Homeschool and Tall Mountain Homeschool continue this tradition with a wide variety of classes and rich community-building.

Over the course of the next couple of decades, SHG saw many changes, as influenced by changes in population, social media/technology usage, fluctuating volunteer energy, and global/local impacts.

Today, the legacy of in-person connections and personal contributions are values SHG continues to promote with its mission.
